The blessing of the McKinley High School canoes took place at the Ala Wai on December 3, 2009. The canoes were a part of a physical education grant that the McKinley Complex received. Objectives of the grant included increasing physical activity and improving nutrition. While the elementary schools received part time teachers for Health and Physical Education instruction, the middle and high school received equipment purchases. McKinley received three canoes because canoe paddling is a physical activity culturally appropriate with the youth of Hawai`i. They also received a set of six Makana Ali`i paddles. Another reason for the purchase of the canoes is in the boats' ability to serve the students for many years to come.
