It sure seems like there is no “off season” in paddling, that’s probably because it’s true. It was only a couple of weeks after Moloka`i Hoe, and we were having pre-season OC-1 races. There were three of them: the Abott Galaher memorial sea-man, the Tui Tonga Challenge and the Try-Go-Athon. All three are cause-related events.
The Sea-man was started by Abott about 12 years ago to give paddlers new to OC-1 paddling a chance to get on the water in a less competitive race atmosphere. This event has always benefited the Hawaii Food Basket. We raised over $500 and 500 pounds of food this year. This event is held at Keauhou Bay with the course going straight out and back.
The purpose of the Tui Tonga Challenge was to raise awareness about keeping youth drug and alcohol free and to work to prevent teen pregnancy. This was and alcohol-free event and featured a clinic on paddling technique, a presentation on diet and training, and a talk from the Kona Community Health Center. This event was supported by a grant from Hawaii County.
The Try-Go-Athon is a triathlon style event on the east side of Hawaii Island, with a short swim, a run and a paddle. There was an excellent turn out with proceeds going to help defray the medical expenses of John Kekua, who lost both of his legs due to complications from diabetes.
These three events demonstrated the generosity of the outrigger community.
The first race of the 2010 Steinlager race series was the 23rd annual Stan Cann Classic. This race started 'way back when' with a few intrepid surfski paddlers; and look where it is now. It’s always a great way to start the season, and of course, it’s also where you find out that your training program is rather non-existent.
