Aloha, Phillip 'Captain' 'Dingo' Napali Kahue, 74, of Waikiki and Ala Wai passed away November 26, '09 on Kaua'i. Born at Kahalu'u, Ko'olaupoko, Oahu on February 7, 1935 to Eliza and James Kahue, the ninth of 11 children, Phillip was a lifetime Waikiki Beach Boy and canoe captain. Most recently, Kalihi Kai Canoe Club, platinum masters captain.
'Cap', or widely known as 'Dingo', had a life-long love of Waikiki and started out at the Waikiki Natatorium in the 40s, and worked as a Waikiki Beach canoe captain through the 90s. He excelled at ocean sports, swimming, diving, body boarding and especially surfing. Formerly, employed at Hale 'Au'au, Outrigger Reef Hotel, Outrigger Canoe Club, and Aloha Beach Service, fronting the Sheraton Moana Surf Hotel, 'Dingo' began outrigger canoe paddling in 1955 with Hui Kalia, and later with Hui Nalu, where they came in 1st place in the Moloka'i-to-Oahu race in 1964. He soon became one of the most renowned steersmen of his time. In the '80s, he and friends started the Wai Nani Canoe Club in Waikiki which is currently known as Kalihi Kai Canoe Club. 'Dingo's' 6-man crews participated in countless canoe regattas over the years. 'Dingo' strongly believed in the Hawaiian-style of canoe paddling which included the 'Hawaiian Blade', and he helped to perpetuate Hawaiian canoe paddling traditions. We will miss him and his friendly nature. He always greeted life with a smile.
