Got koa canoe?
There are so many paddling events going on, we can't cover them all. The sport is growing and new races are added each year. Back in the day, there were a handful of races, and that was it. Now there is a smorgasbord to choose from.
Talking about smorgasbord, that's what will be waiting for paddlers who enter our race, the 'I'll Remember You' fundraiser for 'The Wounded Warriors' here in Hawaii. Yes, we are adding one more event to your busy schedule, but if you prefer not to race, but to just hang out with us and party, you can at Jimmy Buffett's. On October 16th, the weekend after Molokai Hoe, we will race outside of Waikiki, and after the race, ride one of those tourist-type trolly buses from Magic Island to Jimmy Buffett's in Waikiki where the fun will continue. Jimmy Buffett's will provide the stage for one fun get-together with music, 'ono' food from their menu, drink specials and door prizes.
It wasn't until I took on this event that I realized what it took to run a race. Without the help of OHCRA and Jimmy Buffett's, I'd be lost. OHCRA's Race Director Stan Dickson has been so helpful. His 'no worries' attitude and knowledge has given me back my sleepless nights. Organizing the event has shown me how valuable our officials are. La Pule is the bomb, the way he can get those permits taken care off without flinching. (La Pule how about pulling a permit for a parade through Waikiki after the race?—maybe next year)… and of course our sponsor club Waikiki Surf Club didn't hesitate when I asked for their help with insurance. Luana Froiseth with her 'can do' attitude saved the day and Koa Kai's Paul Amoy was happy to lend us some canoes for those who wanted to participate by didn't have an outrigger. Thank you all.
I hope you will be able to join us. More on the event is at our website, pacificpaddler.com. So why do we (all of the above) volunteer our time and energy on these races? I think because we want to give back to the sport that is our extended family, and for us, it's also a way to give back to the men and women in the armed forces who have given up so much for our freedom.
