I'll Remember You

Pacific Paddler and friends raised just over $2,000 for 'Hawaii Supports Our Troops' a 'Wounded Warriors' program here in Hawaii. One-hundred twenty-four paddlers took part in the memorial event outside of Waikiki. Beyond the reef in front of Fort DeRussy, paddlers gathered in a circle to toss in flowers while remembering friends and family we have lost. Both short and long courses started together. The first leg was one mile straight out into the 'deep blue' where a boat was parked. The short course went around the boat and headed back while the long course went to 'The Waikiki War Memorial', made a turn on a buoy and headed back to Magic Island. Hui Lanakila was first back in 33:23 followed by Alapa Hoe, 36:02 and Pacific Paddler Ohana, 36:26. There were a couple of stand-up paddlers, a surf ski, OC1s, OC2s, and OC6s all mixed together. Two double-hulls entered, Kia'i Kai Canoe Club, 48:13 and Hui Nalu Canoe Club, 37:23.

After the race, there was a celebration at Jimmy Buffett’s in Waikiki. Paddlers received a memorial tee-shirt and an event lanyard to take part in the VIP party where there was a free drink, free food and entertainment. A trolly bus provided transportation between Magic Island and Jimmy Buffett's. Margaritaville was the main sponsor and is a big supporter of the Wounded Warrior Programs throughout the U.S.
