Canadian National Sprint Championships

The Canadian National Sprint Championships, held in Calgary at the beginning of October, offered up two great opportunities. The first was for paddlers from all over the country to get together one last time before winter arrived, and the second was to test out the facilities before the World Sprints next year. On both fronts, the race was successful.
120 paddlers competed, including 30 juniors, at the Calgary Racing Centre, a nationally accredited regatta course and facility. Races were held in 500m, 1000m V6 and 500m V1 both with and without a rudder. The event also marked the first of two team qualifying trials for the juniors, in hopes that after having no junior representation in New Caledonia, Calgary 2012 will showcase our biggest junior participation to date.
The Calgary Canoe Club had a strong showing across the board with Steph Koenig and Charlie Olmsted taking gold respectively in both girls and boys under 16 V1 and Robyn Sutherland securing top honors in the girls under 19 V1. Brian McPhail from Penticton grabbed the boys under 19 V1 win. Kamini Jain from False Creek won the open women's V1 and Jeff Fink of Kelowna took the men's open V1 podium. The team events were dominated by the Calgary Canoe Club.
Since an event is only as good as its underlying race, it appears to be looking excellent for next year as Canada gets ready for the outrigger sprint world to descend in August. Lynda Roberts, Race Director for the 2012 Calgary World Sprints had this to say, "The National Sprint Championships was a good warm up regatta in preparation for the 2012 World's. Although on a much smaller scale, officials were given a good training opportunity for starting procedures, paddler marshalling, finish tower logistics and needs, and equipment handling."
