"It was really rough and sloppy, just a lot of stuff coming left-to-right, right-to-left. Lucky the current and wind was pushing us the whole way."

ropatiSo what's going on this time of year? Apart from the chance to see Santa surfing at Waikiki, there's high school paddling here in Hawaii. It's good to see so many young people being introduced to the sport. Paddling can have it's benefits. On page 17 we have a story on Kahala Schneider, who at the age of 17 has received an athletic scholarship based on her Hawaiian canoe paddling capabilities. Looks like recruiters are checking Hawaii out for potential rowers. Also a piece on how to keep the canoe building tradition alive. Should we build strip-plank koa canoes? The time it takes to carve a canoe from a log may take several years. The time to build a strip-plank koa may only take a month.
In our case, tradition dictates that the December issue is primarily about Na Wahine O Ke Kai and Molokai Hoe. Na Wahine has a new champion and Molokai Hoe's reigning champion smashes their own record by 8 minutes. The Tahitians are getting faster and so are we. As they raise the bar, our paddlers also improve. How fast can you cross the channel?
Our condolences to the Heen family. For me, Beanie was always there, ready to help and lend a hand. This magazine is dedicated to him.

In this issue

Na Wahine O Ke Kai

On September 23rd, 72 crews raced across the Kaiwi Channel in the 33rd Annual Na Wahine O Ke Kai. Paddlers from Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, California and throughout Hawaii converged on Molokai for this annual 'Rite of Passage'. >>digital content>> [top]

Molokai Hoe

Shell Va'a returned to claim it's thrown and in doing so smashed it's previous record by nearly eight minutes finishing in 4:30:54. >>digital content>> [top]

Harrison 'Beanie' Lono Heen

Harrison" Beanie" Lono Heen passed away on Nov 4, 2011 in Waimea, Hawaii. These are a few remembrances of time with Beanie. For more, or to add your own, go to www.AlohaBeanie.com.
Kamoa Kalama - Auwe auhea len a ali'i o'Hawai'i o ka aina o'Kailua. Aloha - Akahai e na Hawai'i Mahalo for the kindness that you've shown to all who crossed your path.

What is tradition?

Canoe Associations statewide should consider adopting strip-plank koa canoes which have many advantages over canoes made from a single koa log:
1.) Scarcity of 45' koa logs
. >>digital content>> [top]

Paddling Scholarship

Kahala Schneider, age 17, is Hawaii's first student to receive athletic scholarship offers to top ranked athletic mainland colleges based on her Hawaiian canoe paddling capabilities. >>digital content>> [top]

SoCal Ocean Racing

On Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 12th, race hosts San Diego Outrigger made the scramble to postpone the race due to the threat of bad weather. They didn't want paddlers to have to possibly punch through a seven-foot shore break.

Another Dam Race

Paddling in the desert? Well, yes! There was a little bit of Hawaii in Arizona as 195 paddlers, OC's, surfski, paddle board, and SUP, competed in Another Dam Race

Canadian National Sprint Champs

The Canadian National Sprint Championships, held in Calgary at the beginning of October, offered up two great opportunities. The first was for paddlers from all over the country to get together one last time before winter arrived, and the second was to test out the facilities before the World Sprints next year. >>digital content>> [top]

Keeping your muscles limber

Ever wonder why your fingers go numb when you paddle? Why can't you straighten out your elbow? Or maybe you have headaches that start at the base of your neck and travel to your head. >>digital content>> [top]

Canoe Surfing Challenge

I love surfing the Outriggers in the waves! When I got an invitation to come to the 6th annual canoe surfing challenge from Chris and Beth Kauwe, of Honi Honi Honey fame, a bolt of 'stoke' went through my body. >>digital content>> [top]
